What is Dissociative Identity Disorder? How is Dissociative Identity Disorder formed? | Dissociative identity disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple personality disorder (MPD), is a dissociative disorder formed due to repeated trauma in childhood & a disorganized attachment with caregivers |
What is the diagnostic criteria for Dissociative Identity Disorder? | In the DSM-5-TR, there is 5 criteria. And in the ICD 11, there is around 6. I will provide the links to look at the criteria as its genuinely too long to copy and paste it. DSM-5-TR ICD 11 |
Are there any other disorders similar to dissociative identity disorder? If so, what are they and where can I find it? | Yes! In the DSM-5-TR there is Other Specified Dissociative Disorder (OSDD). And in the ICD there is Partial Dissociative Identity Disorder (P-DID). In the DSM-5-TR, there is 4 different presentations of OSDD, and the 1st presentation, also called OSDD-1, is the only one that is similar to Dissociative Identity Disorder. DSM-5-TR ICD 11 |
Is Dissociative Identity Disorder overdiagnosed? | No, DID is not overdiagnosed according to this article. Also, due to the demonization of the disorder and skepticism on whether or not DID exists (it does exist.), a lot of medical professionals will overlook symptoms of DID and fail to accurately notice, diagnose, and treat it. |

What is Polyfragmentation? | Polyfragmentation, or polyfragmented, is when someone with Dissociative Identity disorder has a high number of fragments (usually a 2:1 or 3:1 fragment to alter ratio) than fully formed alters |
What are fragments? | Fragments are alters with a less fully formed identity. They may not have any interests and likes and dislikes, or a name, or pronouns. Fragments may vary depending on the polyfragmented system you are talking to. |
What are some things common in polyfragmented dissociative identity disorder systems? | Things that are seen in polyfragmented systems are, a higher amount of dissociation compared to other people with DID who are not polyfragmented, a high fragment to alter count, complex and repetitive and often inescapable trauma in childhood (before the ages of 5), having a higher chance to split new alters or fragments due to not having a strong coping mechanism that isn't dissociation, a complex and detailed innerworld, and many more. You can see the paper that talks about polyfragmentation here |
Can OSDD-1 systems be polyfragmented? | In the majority of cases, no. In OSDD-1 there are 2 different presentations, often called OSDD-1a and OSDD-1b. In OSDD-1a, there is amnesia and dissociation, the same amount in non polyfragmented DID, but alters are not as distinct and fully formed. In OSDD-1b, alters are more distinct and more fully formed than in OSDD-1a, but there is little to no amnesia. Although, if a system who went through programming in early childhood was programmed to present and function as an OSDD-1 system, then they can be polyfragmented as they only present as an OSDD-1 system due to their handlers |
What is C-DID and HC-DID? | C-DID, or complex DID, is another term for polyfragmented DID, and HC-DID, or highly complex DID, is a term for systems who's system structure is highly complex due to RAMCOA and or TBMC. |

Can children have dissociative identity disorder? | Yes! The disorder itself is formed only in childhood so obviously children can have it. There have also been quite a few cases of children and adolescents being diagnosed and treated for dissociative identity disorder. And in the diagnostic criteria for DID in the DSM-5-TR, children are mentioned in one of the criteria in a note. |
Can you share some cases of children and adolescents being diagnosed and treated for Dissociative Identity Disorder? | Of course! This first case is of a 16 year old from Korea, with nine alters, who was diagnosed and treated for DID. And this second case is about a 10 year old girl who was diagnosed with DID and treated for it. |
How could DID present in children? | Well, it will obviously depend on the system and what they need and if they're overt or covert, but in overt systems in childhood they may call themselves a different name from their host and dress differently, they might act differently from their host. That's just a few ways it may present in children. They may also appear to be very forgetful, since most people don't realize that its amnesia because of DID and not just a forgetful child. |

What is introjection? | In psychology, introjection (also known as identification or internalization) is the unconscious adoption of the thoughts or personality traits of others. It occurs as a normal part of development, such as a child taking on parental values and attitudes. It can also be a defense mechanism in situations that arouse anxiety. (Wikipedia) |
What are introject alters? | Introject alters are alters in systems that are based off of an outside source, such as a caretaker, a fictional character, or anything else that the brain decides is helpful to the system in order to keep surviving. |
Introject alters aren't real | They actually are! In this paper about polyfragmentation, there is a section that talks about introject alters, confirming that introject alters are medically recognized as an actual thing to happen. |
What are fictives and factives? | The terms fictive and factive are more specific terms for introject alters, "fictive" being for alters who are based off a fictional source, such as superman for example, and "factive" being for alters who are based off of a real source, such as a "safe person" a child may have while they're going through trauma. |
Can you pick who you get an introject of? | No. You cannot choose the alters that split, including introjects. If it was possible to choose, many systems out there would not have introjects of their abusers. |
